Bullshit, the people who refuse to wear masks and take other precautions would refuse no matter who's in office. Would those 200,000 never have died if Biden was inn office? Besides, this is a GLOBAL pandemic, you want to blame every single world leader for the deaths in their country? Each country is being hit with deaths, the only few that are getting it somewhat under control are the totalitarian nations. As long as we have the liberties that we do, the virus WILL spread. And even at that, the US has one of the lowest death to infection ratios in the world.

Yep, I do want to blame every single world leader for the deaths of their country, because that country is their responsibility.

At least Biden would have made facemasks mandatory and imposed stricter precautions. Actually, most governments (including the US) have precautions set in place so that if a country is in a crisis, they will get authoritarian power. Oh, and never mind the fact that Trump completely disregarded guidelines for a pandemic or an epidemic set in place by Obama

Blaming every world leader for what individuals with free will choosing to not follow rules is stupid beyond comparison.
The other thing you forget is that putting out a mask mandate does not mean everyone will wear a mask. At least, not while still keeping America free. What kind of force are we talking to ensure everybody does wear masks? Also remember that not all masks are effective. There are many companies producing "breathable" masks, which just means it's thin enough for the virus to get through anyway.
The way to stop a pandemic is to achieve herd immunity. The faster everybody is infected and develops antibodies or receives them from a vaccine, the faster we can go back to normal. Not only is it impossible to make everybody wear a masks while maintaining our basic rights, but it doesn't achieve the ultimate objective.

There have been cases of re-infection, so herd immunity from the disease is not the answer. Just put restrictions on the quality of the masks so they are actually effective. And don't worry, an easy way to have a mask law is just to hand out fines to people who don't wear masks (they don't have to be $500,000, just enough to deter people from not wearing them).

And I am blaming the world leaders on the Covid deaths. Countries with very few, not so much, countries with a lot (like the UK, US and Italy), very much. The countries with more Covid deaths have done worse, like the UK did TERRIBLY. They haven't updated the NHS gear since 2012, despite better gear being available, they initiated a lockdown far too late, and on the whole have reacted shoddily.

While I do agree with you that immunity is the only way to stop it, getting it from vaccines would (unsurprisingly) cost fewer lives than getting it from the real thing.

The flip side is more than 99% of people survive Covid. The ones that do are mostly successfully fighting it off again, and many times better than before since the virus does mutate but our body develops M-cells. It's like how you will never stop getting the common cold or the flu, but you aren't at fear of dying from it anytime soon even though the flu has a higher death rate than Covid. (Both influenza and covid-19 are types of coronaviruses.) Too much of this is fear, lacking clarity.

All countries have many cases, the ones you see with few cases are because they aren't counting effectively. That's why modern countries with better health systems and better counting appear to have more cases. India is only reporting a fraction of a percent of the true cases, so when you look at plain data it looks as if the US is crumbling, but when you factor in reality, we're doing much better than most.

And 51 million cases worldwide. That's still a lot of deaths. And as a matter of fact, a lot of doctors and other medical professionals are reporting an alarming number of re-infections. I'm not saying that the US is crumbling, All I'm saying is that the US could be doing a lot better

I like how you named the cases and then “that’s a lot of deaths“. Distorted facts once again, the actual number of deaths is 1.28 million and 33.6 million of the 51 million cases you named recovered. That means only 0.02% of people are actually dying, and 66% of people are hospitalized but recover fine. And most of the people re-infected fight it off once again since the body creates M-cells. We get reinfected by the flu all the time but we get over it. Once the body is accustomed we can continue to fight it off same way we do regular diseases. The spanish flu still exists today and many are still infected by it but it’s not a crisis anymore since humans become accustomed. This is not as bad as you think.

Also WTF do M cells have to do with covid? Seriously....I work in this field and I have no idea why M Cells matter here. They are gut/intestinal cells involved with mucosal immunity but I don’t see anyone anywhere referencing them as an important part of the body’s COVID response.

Also your Spanish flu analogy is straight up dumb. Viruses mutate so descendants of Spanish flu exist but not the same virus that was around 100 years ago.

M cells are memory cells. When you get a virus you can fight it off the next time because your body develops memory cells.

My spanish flu analogy is actually perfect because going by what you say too Covid should mutate after herd immunity is achieved and then it won't be a problem in the future.

Learn to math properly. Divide cases by deaths gets you to 0.024671694344926

However that’s not a percentage. You have to move the decimal two places to the right to get the percentage.
2.5% death rate. It’s f**king basic math.

Also you are thinking of Memory B cells. Not "M Cells"

Jesus. you're the worst type of person that gets wrong info, thinks it's right and spreads it.
Like a virus.

You are a stupid virus vector. Good job.

The real killer isn't the disease itself, but the fact that it seriously weakens your body's bacterial defences. This allows bacteria who wouldn't normally be a problem to kill you or cause serious damage. Unlike other pandemics, this one doesn't kill by itself.

Just a small error, but it is Memory T-cells and Memory B-cells that make you immune.

It is still very infectious, and most estimates put it at 80% infected. That would be 0.8% dead, making 6.24 million dead, in other words, we are only one 5th of the way through. Wouldn't that be fun!
[deleted]
0 ups, 4y
Of course that's not fun but the question remains: What are we not doing that we should be doing right now? Or is large scale death inevitable?
[deleted]
0 ups, 4y
What are we not doing right now?

Stricter laws about staying inside and wearing masks. Earlier lockdown. More serious handling

M cells are NOT "memory" cells

Where the hell do you get your information?

Seriously....post links to this information.

Herd immunity without a vaccine will result in MILLIONS of deaths. The idea of "herd immunity" in this case is more right wing nonsense. You need about a 70% infection rate to achieve possible "herd" immunity. (more is better but lets go with 70%)
US population is about 300 million
70% infection rate is 210 million
2% (as we KNOW is low but lets go low and say 2%) death rate = 4,200,000 deaths. In the USA alone.

Also it would take years (hopefully) to achieve a 70% infection rate, any less time and you will have to add in probably a couple million more deaths for hospitals being inundated by COVID patients and killing off others that need medical attention but can't get it.

0 ups, 4y
I never said M-cells aren't memory cells. I said that generally it is T-cells and B-cells that do the remembering. And don't worry, it wouldn't take years, because the more people get infected, the more people will gat infected. It's exponential growth
[deleted]
0 ups, 4y
Actually at the moment we're coming up on 25% and the more people get infected the faster the rate of infection goes. It won't take as long as you say.

Flu viruses are not corona virus.
About 2% of covid cases resulted in death so far worldwide....far fewer than 1% of flu cases result in death.

Your info is flawed all over the place.

Idiot: we are at 10.4million cases. 25% infection rate would be 75 million.

You literally are the worst at all of this

I'm not going by the WHO's numbers which they themselves know are wrong. I'm going by their estimate of the actual number since many countries including densely populated ones like India are barely counting at all.

And can we talk about something else? I haven't heard a rebuttal to any of my other points yet, just the virus so far.

The JHU website uses verified cases vs verified deaths. I don’t really care how many cases aren’t reported in India. I know the US numbers are valid and the stats work out the same. About 2.5% death rate.
[deleted]
0 ups, 4y
I’m not talking about the death rate I’m talking about the total cases globally
0 ups, 4y
No. Again you are simply wrong.

You think the flu is a coronavirus yet you get the math right? No.

Why do you hate science?

Simply look at Johns Hopkins Covid dashboard.

Worldwide cases: 51,788,782
Worldwide deaths: 1,277,717
Math: 0.024671694344926

Which is 2.5% rounding up.

You don’t understand decimals and percentages.

No, yours is. Covid-19 is the name of the virus. Coronavirus is the name for a group pf viruses that behave similarly. Both Covid-19 and the flu are coronaviruses, which spread primarily through the air.

Trump cultists listen to their leader. Many of them, if told to wear a mask by scientists, would if their leader also told them to. But don’t because he sent the message masks weren’t helpful or necessary.

He could tell them the same thing about toilet paper and tissues and they would walk around with shit and snot on their hands calling it “patriotism.”
