And of course, there's a million references in the movie to her and her gardener family being the enemies of the other world which is made of bugs.
And of course the whole theme of sewing and weaving is also intertwined with the fact that the main monster is nearly a spider.

Okay! So our little heroine: Coraline Jones. Age 11, an only child from Pontiac Michigan. Her parents moved with her to the pink palace, a 150 year old mansion divided for 3 renters.
Her neighbors are crazy and old, her parents are too busy for her, and she has a stalker following her around on his bike.

Her parents write for a plant catalog but they hate dirt. Theyre both too busy for her. Upon having a conversation with her busy mother, she gets handed a doll that is identical to her from Wybie, her stalker. The doll is 150 years old and Coraline carries it around her house as she unpacks. She finishes exploring but when she turns to find her doll, its now hidden behind a canvas on the floor.
She moves the canvas to find a small door behind the wallpaper. She makes her mom open it and it's all bricked up. Her mom tells her it probably got closed off when they divided up the house.

A little later she goes outside, delivers some mixed up mail to her neighbor the great Mr.Bobinsky and his dancing mice circus. After she leaves to visit the old actresses downstairs, Bobinsky tells her he has a message from the mice: Don't go through the door.

The old actresses give her tea, ancient taffy and a terrifying view of 50+ dead Scotty dogs that have been stuffed. Mrs.Spink and Forcible read her tea leaves to reveal she's in terrible danger.

She shrugs it off, goes home to find slime(chard) and goes to bed hungry. At midnight, she hears squeaking in her room. She finds one of the circus mice running downstairs. She follows it until it leads her to the door which her mother neglected to lock. Coraline opens the door and its a glowing blue tunnel. She crawls through to find herself back in the house in which she came from. Only 1. It's much more colorful and vibrant and 2. Something smells good.
She walks in the kitchen to find her Mom singing and cooking. She turns around to look at Coraline and she's identical in every single way except the huge black buttons sewn over her eyes.

Her mom (who never cooks anything ((her Dad makes elaborate recipes that Coraline hates)) ) is making a huge feast of traditional food like chicken, peas, corn, rolls etc. "You're not my mother. My mother doesn't have bu- bububu-" she gets cut off as her fake mother says "Buttons? Of course. I'm your other mother, Silly. Now go get your other father for supper."
She finds her Dad who looks healthier and happier, though he also has buttons for eyes. He's playing piano singing about Coraline. They eat dinner and Coraline is glad to eat because she hasn't eaten anything in a day or so. The whole world is very light hearted and kind and its overall very appealing to a bored child

Her parents tuck her in and leave her in her perfect, vibrant room. She wakes up back in the real world.

That's as much as I can say without ruining everything.
