Speaking only for myself, I voted for McCain in ‘08, then libertarian in ‘12 and ‘16. I didn’t care at all about Trump’s victory, even though my liberal friends were freaking out. I thought that he ran an offensive campaign but figured that he would grow and mature into the office of President. And I stayed pretty okay with Trump even through the Russiagate stuff. The economy was still doing well, after all, and he hadn’t gotten us into any new wars.
Ukrainegate/impeachment is what really turned me against Trump, and woke me up to the fact he’s a wannabe fascist willing to do anything to torpedo an election opponent and is totally enabled by the GOP in his malfeasance and corruption. All the awful statements he made that I once dismissed as merely cringey now seemed a part of an unmistakable pattern of abuse. In 2020, he has gone from bad to worse.
Trump’s offensiveness has awakened a deep reserve of anger in so many different groups: Blacks and Latinos certainly, women definitely, LGBTQ folks, the college-educated in general, the young, and even the elderly now with his callous response to Covid.
Two weeks ago I cast my first ballot ever for a Democrat to be President, and I couldn’t have felt better about it.
So, if I (a straight white boy from the South) feel this immense anger toward Trump and have been driven farther Left than ever before in my life because of Trump’s antics, I can’t imagine I’m the only one.
