Just in my own family: my parents adopted 2 children (aged 3 and 4, yours truly) my mom took in her step daughter who got pregnant in college, we later helped her escape an abusive relationship with the baby's father. We donated time and supplies to many single mothers, my dad for many years would stand outside an abortion clinic holding a sign that said "we will give you whatever you need to help you and your baby". My mom who had had an abortion herself as a young woman has helped countless women Christian or not. Currently even though our own family is large and we aren't exactly rolling in dough have taken in a first time mom and her newborn while her husband tries to get his citizenship so they can escape the killings going on in their country. My niece for her senior project hosted a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the Children's cranialfacial organization that helps children born with deformities get the medical attention they need. I could go on. I don't share this to brag but to show that we really do care on a personal level.

I only take offense to the implication that Democrats don’t care or that the ways we choose to help aren’t also valid.

Yet, some do. And those are the ones who came and spoke to him and we helped them.

I uphold women’s rights and access to medical care, both for their own health generally and their reproductive choices

I pay taxes without complaining

I support raising taxes on the rich and lowering the overall tax burden on the poor

I support welfare and food stamps for those in need

I oppose sexism, misogyny, and degrading abuse of women generally

I raise awareness of issues like rape and domestic violence. Wife and I give several hundred dollars at least once a year to a local charity that provides DV-related supportive services to women — her aunt is a director of it, actually

Your response is exactly what I expected. So conservatives take a more personal approach and liberals simply put the responsibility to help thy neighbor in the lap of the government. Which is fine. And no your efforts aren't negated by the fact you might not personally help a woman in need in your own community any more than our community outreach is negated by the attitude that it's not just a government problem. Why can't we have both? It would be nice to see Democrats and Republicans work hand in hand to help women in the community and in government. I think that starts with respectful dialogue like this rather than pointing out what we feel the other party is not doing enough of. Agreed?
