I am asking this question because I am one of those only guys in school who doesn't like rap. While just about everybody likes rap, I am those guys who doesn't understand it. No offense, but first, rap to me has no music, just some guy blurting out the lyrics as fast as possible. The closest thing you could consider to music is the background noise, which is played by the DJ. I don't consider DJ's musicians because I bet they can't read sheet music. Second, I am pretty sure the type of rap that everybody likes is gangsta rap and also the type where they have excessive use of curse words which is something I denounce. Third, look at those guys rapping in the video. He probably would have at least one inappropriate thing in the video, such as weed, guns, doing wild things, or at least something that most schools won't approve of. I think rap isn't for teens, it is more for adults. Last reason, look at those kids that listen to rap at my school, they are those kids whose grades are low and get into trouble a lot at school. I believe rap has an effect on them. As I wrote this, I am not trying to offend any rap fans, but that I just simply hate rap. I just want people to understand why I hate it and that is the reason I wrote this.

There's a difference between rap and hip hop though. I'm not a fan of hip hop (with only very few exceptions) and I just don't see the point in gangsta rap. But that's not all that exists. There is an ever increasing amount of intellectual rap as well - you just have to dig a little. Give it a try, you might actually like some of it. 😉

Yes and no... It depends song by song. There are many rap songs out there I like. From Pet Shop Boys which is more rap with synth music, like "West End Girls" for example, but also a few gangsta songs, like "Gangsta's paradise". And of course, also some songs that do combine rap with other styles, like "Prince Igor" where rap and opera come together.

Rap is a really broad term as there are many styles of music in which rap is used nowadays. The Pet Shop Boys who have many songs in which they rap, cannot be compared to Coolio, who is more in the Gangsta style. And also some discussion if rap can really be rap if you use a full music band and don't just beatbox yourself.

Now I have a very wide taste of music. I can listen to rock songs, and even some harder rock songs, but I can also listen to Beethoven and Mozart. Rap is just one of the many kinds of music out there, and rap has so many shapes and sizes, that I can hardly say I like rap or dislike it. There are also tons of rap songs I really hate. So that's why I guess "yes" and "no" both apply in my case.
