What if I told you I had a way of knowing how old something is, but it couldn't be used to tell the age of anything we actually know the age of from other methods. It doesn't work on anything that was ever in a molten state, its based on assumptions about the past that we can't verify, and it gives completely different dates (by millions and billions of years) every time you use it, even on the same sample?
Well that's radiometric dating in a nutshell. That's not science.
