I suspect that polarization is inevitable in two party systems. Both psychological splitting and conflation fallacies are systematically encouraged. To be healthy, a nation requires at least three viable parties, both for the sake of greater choice and for coalition building. Also, large, powerful parties subvert constitutional checks and balances, and the separation of powers.
