They have the wrong view on life, period. Simply put, life is you win some you lose some. You have good times and you have bad times, and you have to take the good with the bad. Goths and emos from what I’ve seen fail to understand this and instead wallow in their own misery.

Some people just like dark stuff. Maybe they like to wear black and listen to death metal bands but some of them can be pretty nice if you just give them a chance.

In my personal experience goth people just enjoy all parts of life a bit differently. They embrace the darker, more macabre aspects a bit more than most people and I think that is very healthy - you don't always have to fight through the bad times if you can appreciate them in their own right.

Trigger warning for the next paragraph (although I feel like in a discussion about emos this should not come as a surprise...)

Emos are perhaps a different story. For others it might seem weird but there are people who are just more emotional (thus the word "emo") and have a much harder time dealing with the bad parts of life. They feel everything more intense - the good and the bad. And it might just be easier to deal with physical pain than emotional pain sometimes which is one of the reasons for self harm. Sometimes this hypersensitivity can get better with therapy or mental exercise or just getting used to it and learning to deal with things like panic attacks, but sometimes it just won't work. Sometimes music can help (even if you might not call that music), sometimes a different way of expressing yourself can help, sometimes just knowing there are others out there who are dealing with similar issues and being part of a community can help. So, as long as they're not bothering anyone else, I say just let them do whatever they need to do. I'm sure you have experienced that sometimes crying can be a good thing and actually help you get over loss or unfairness - that's why babies and kids do it, afterall. It is certainly a healthy attitude to just accept bad things, shrug, and keep going because you know it'll probably get better again. But not everyone is at that stage or can perhaps ever be. Some people need an outlet of some sort and identifying with the "emo culture" can be one.

The problem I have with emo culture (as an outsider) is that it seems like a competition to see if you can "out emo" the other members of the emo community.

That might be true, actually... I don't know - I guess I'm too far removed from it now. And apparently anything is a "challenge" these days. That certainly is just stupid.

I may have made an unfair judgement. There was no emo when I grew up, unless you consider The Cure or The Smiths emo. Technically, I don't believe they are. I have had cursory interactions with only a few people who identify as emo.

No, I would call them punk if anything... 🤔 A precursor that emo split off of eventually, if you will. I guess there have always been emos but they didn't really start identifying as a seperate group/culture until the early 2000s - by my guess.

Depression is not a light switch that you can turn off. It feels like an outside force that controls you and you can't explain where it came from. It is not about good times and bad times. Have you ever had something good happen to you that should make you happy but instead you just feel sad for no reason? When you are depressed "normal" people don't want to be around you because they don't want your depression rubbing off on them. For that reason it is natural for depressed people to group together on the fringes of mainstream society.

I was trying not to go down the depression rabbithole because not every emo is depressed and not everyone with depression is an emo. But there certainly is some overlap. The worst thing about depression is you never know when it's gonna hit you again. Usually, you're not necessarily down all the time. There can be moments when you're actually in a good mood. You just never know when it'll all come crashing down and bury you under it...

It's more like a giant switchboard where you try changing little things at a time but you have no idea what combinations turn the lights on or off and the littlest thing can knock you out without you knowing which thing did it.

I was responding to OP when they wrote emo and goth people have the wrong world view, need to take the good with the bad and not wallow in their own misery. It sounded like telling a person with depression to "cheer up." Not all emo and goth people have the same world view, focus only on the bad, or wallow in misery.

Yes, and I really liked your analogy and wanted to expand on it. 😉

i like this idea, but what if someone never got the good that was supposed to come with the bad, and only got the bad?
0 ups, 4y
I was emo... but then I created men to keep me company. So, whenever I feel bad about something, I physically reveal to mankind exactly what I feel. Like right now, I don't feel like partying and meeting other Gods from the Multiverse and that's just what I asked humanity to do.
Opening up, always helps.

what's wrong with them? there's actually a lot different between goths and emos. goth is a subculture based off dark stuff, emo is a subculture based off emotional rock.
4 ups, 4y
I ain't one, I'll tell you that

I dunno, goth's kind of just like a fashion style right? And emo....eh, I don't really know.

I wore only black clothing in high school and hated goths. Emo wasn't a thing then. Now it just seems like kids being kids.

I'm not a goth, or emo, but I guess I'm sorta goth. I like creepy stuff and wear a lot of black, but some aspects I'm not like. What I'm trying to say is there are different levels of goth/emo. I feel emo is similar to goth, but also very different. Emo people are usually depressed, while goth people can be happy and just enjoy things with darker moods.

People come in many shapes, sizes, fashion sense, ad infinitum, when you frame a question like this, you are not asking about people, you are asking about labels. This creates stereotypes, and later ignorance. If you asked me (hypothetical) what do you thing about Anna? I can answer you. This is not a question anyone can answer though.
