ImgFlip will always change and evolve. Stasis is a recipe for stagnation. I haven’t looked at the numbers lately, but last I checked ImgFlip was growing and growing, which suggests the site Mods are doing something right.
I am (relatively) new here. Example: I was not around before ImgFlip was subdivided into streams. Some old-timers (or, more respectfully: ImgFlip veterans) still seem bitter over that, but I must say streams are one of ImgFlip’s most attractive features to me. If it weren’t for meme streams, I don’t think I would have stayed very long on this platform. I’ve dabbled with other meme creation sites that aren’t organized by streams, and they just didn’t work for me.
Meme Streams help build community by allowing memers to find and share related content and meet others interested in the same things they are.
Now for this new feature: Disabling meme comments.
Everyone who knows me knows I love chatting endlessly in the comments and often go on for too long.
But that doesn’t mean I’m against disabling meme comments necessarily. This can be useful in all sorts of circumstances. The overall point I emphasize is that it can encourage listening to other memers and their viewpoints rather than reaching instantly for the fire-back cannon.
I am told this new feature can be abused to attack others without the opportunity of responding: I haven’t seen that myself yet. But then again, let’s remember meme comments themselves and pretty much any other feature of ImgFlip can be abused to attack others.
There is no perfect solution to cyberbullying, but disabling comments gives content creators another tool in their back pocket for when they want to make memes but just don’t want to encounter any backtalk or deal with others for whatever reason.
As for me: I have 1000’s of memes with comments enabled and plan to keep the vast majority of my new content open for comment. So I will not be hard to find.
But I’ll also disable comments every now and then, in praxis of my viewpoint, and in solidarity with those memers present and future who will find this new feature worthwhile.
