They do run a candidate but they know a communist candidate would never get elected. So the majority of communists hide in the Democratic Party, which they have basically taken over from the Democrats

Same could be said about the KKK and the neo-nazis.
Every extremist organisation has to seek shelter under either the blue or red political umbrella. It's not gonna change unless there is a major (purple) third party.
