The badger was picked by JKR because it represents Hufflepuff traits. Hufflepuff is not a weak house as Newt Scamander shows us. The badger was chosen because Badgers are usually quiet animals but when they are challenged they can stand up to creatures 5x their size. This is why you should never be ashamed to be a hufflepuff.
