They were, as they love to say, virtue signaling. I went back and checked the MLK meme you posted below and there are trogs like Karen1972 espousing his virtues but calling Obama a race baiter...absolute nonsense.

Horseshit. Worth noting too MLK was starting to become more controversial toward the end of his life as he shifted focus to the Vietnam War and economic justice.
