My brain: the easiest way to tell that this person(not KylieAlt_89, I'm referring to Spider) is somewhat racist(or at the very least a bit prejudiced) is by their vast stereotyping of white people. Furthermore, their thought process that somehow some of the most progressive TV series creators ever have racist and imperialist viewpoints is ludicrous.

I'm no Trekkie, but I have to come to the show's defense. Star Trek is one of the most progressive TV shows of all time. If not the newer ones than the Original Series definitely was, especially for the '60s: a black woman and an Asian both played leading characters, first televised interracial kiss, etc.

Jews are predominantly white, and there are plenty of white non-Jews who harbor no hate towards them(such as myself, I'm pro-Israel in fact). Perhaps the Ferengi do play into some antisemitic tropes, however I've gotten the impression they are intended more as a critique of capitalism and consumerist culture.

Guess I can't take a joke or whatever.

Debating the contributions of a pop culture touchstone. | STAR TREK'S PROBLEMATIC ELEMENTS STAR TREK'S PROGRESSIVE ELEMENTS | image tagged in levar burton hotline bling, star trek, star trek the next generation, progressive, bigotry, pop culture | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
My wife's a Trekkie and we're both liberal/progressive. She sat me down to watch The Next Generation a year or so ago and... yeah, we both found the Ferengi stuff was mega cringe.

I guess Star Trek was pretty progressive especially for its time (did have a pretty racially-mixed cast after all, and was about encountering and trying to make peace with other cultures/ways of life), but some of the racial/exoticism tropes are... problematic. Some pretty sexist/condescending stuff toward women too.

But not as bad on bigotry issues as, say, many of the old-timey Looney Tunes cartoons are starting to look.

But overall I'd still count it as a great contribution to pop culture and inspiration to many. Not trying to get it #cancelled or anything. Just saw this take and coupled with my own impression of how the Ferengi are portrayed, thought I'd meme in.
