No less a figure than conservative/moderate NYT columnist David Brooks has questioned the “nuclear family” ideal. In fact, the *extended* family has been a more common form of kinship for longer in our country’s history.
In addition, the idyllic picture of a “nuclear family” that we associate with the 1950s post-war boom period is simply erroneous. It was actually supported by neighborhood ties that were more substantial than what we have today. Families routinely looked after their neighbors’ kids, etc.
BLM’s statement similarly strikes me as a recognition of the plain reality that the nuclear family has failed and we need to recognize alternatives rather than continuing to hold it on a pedestal.
