Shortly before the Horus Heresy, Magnus the Red received a vision of Horus betraying the emperor. Unsure of who to trust and unaware of the webway project, Magnus decided to attempt to message the emperor. However, due to the webway project, it failed catastrophically and the emperor dispatched Leman Russ to capture Magnus.
However, Horus spoke to Russ before he could get to Magnus and persuaded him to kill Magnus and the Thousand Sons against the emperor's command. Magnus was actually willing to go with Russ quietly going to the lengths of cloaking his ships from his own legion to prevent them from fighting back. If was only when Russ started killing the Thousand Sons, Magnus decided to retaliate.
