How a black man became the first American slave owner

In 1621 a black man by the name of Anthony Johnson arrived from Africa to Virginia to be an indentured servant, not a slave. He was captured by Arab traders in his native Angola and sold as a slave. By 1635 he had completed his service contract, and by the late 1640’s he had acquired 250 acres of land. As a land owner he started using indentured servants himself, acquiring five. In 1654 one of his servants, a black man by the name of John Casor was due for release from his service. Johnson decided to extend his service and Casor left to work for Robert Parker who was a free white man. That year Johnson sued Parker in Northampton Court, and in 1655 the court ruled that Johnson could hold Cason indefinitely. The court gave sanction for blacks to hold slaves of their own race. This made Anthony Johnson the first American slave owner and John Cason the first slave in the American colonies. It was another 15 years before the colonial assembly granted free whites, blacks and Indians permission to own black slaves.

I find it funny *sad funny* that they're tearing down statues of people because they believe they are terrible people, while honoring a man who invaded the home of a pregnant woman and shoved a gun her abdomen.

It's not about the man, it's about a knee on a neck for eight minutes and forty-six seconds. If he was shot like plenty of innocent Americas have been by police in recent years, it's an easier pill to swallow. Eight minutes, several of which are a man begging for his life, is not reconcilable.

She wasn't pregnant, but that doesn't change the fact George Floyd was a thug. Did he deserve the death he got? No. Could he have avoided the situation that led to his death? Yes, by obeying the law.

So... we SHOULD keep up statues of those that supported slavery?

No, because he had other, more important accomplishments than supporting slavery. The statues are of those who are mainly known for fighting for slavery.

What is Adolf Hitler known for? Being the leader of the Nazi party. He also made relatively good paintings, but that doesn't mean that we should go around erecting statues of him.

It matters what the people did, and if anything else they did was morally righteous enough to make up for it. Personally, I don't think fighting for the right to own another person is forgivable, and until anything else comes to light about the people that these statues display that could make up for them being confederate soldiers, I will continue to think this way.

It's not just the statues that they would disagree with either. Look at all the monuments and statues of abolitionists and even black soldiers that they've defaced and/or destroyed.
