I don't know why we completely abolished the death penalty.

Although, quite frankly, a person caught in the act of a heinous crime (murder / r*pe), ought to be shot on site. Like that one shooter in a Texas church.

By putting criminals to death, we're no better than them.

Let me clarify: this doesn't apply to ALL criminals. Petty criminals and white-collar criminals (non-murderous and non-rapists) can do without the death penalty. A person caught in the act of murder 1 / attempted murder 1 (let's say something like a mass shooting) or something just as heinous ought to be put to death. If he turns on police, shoot him on the spot. Obviously murder 2 deserves jail time.

In what context? Am I a murderer? If so, yes I might prefer execution over jail.

Exactly. It'd be more of a punishment to make murderers spend the rest of their lives in prison. Executing them would be too good for them.

On the other hand, it would make the severity of the punishment weaker. Murder comes with serious consequences under capital punishment, the family of the victim gets justice and closure, and people don't have to fund facilities to keep alive people who have unjustly taken others' lives.

Exactly, life imprisonment is a much better sentence.

Having the victim's family torture the killer (surefire cases only, I'm afraid).
