If I ever went to one of those protests, I'd be sure to have someone there with me readily available to begin recording in case anything went down. Particularly if anyone attacked me, whether it be other protesters or the police. That way I would have evidence

two of my other friends are going so ill make sure to record if anything suspicous happens
