Confederate =/= Democrat. A lot of Northern Democrats who supported the Union would have an issue with that.
And anyway, the Democratic and Republican Parties both have been through so many upheavals over the past 160 years that comparing their modern iterations to that time is not very apt.
The GOP isn’t the party of Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt or even Reagan anymore.
And the Democratic Party that elected the first black President ever in our nation’s history isn’t the same as the party of Andrew Jackson or Andrew Johnson.
The clearest proof of their changes is this. As between Republicans and Democrats:
—Who displays the Confederate flag most often these days? Who calls for it to be taken down?
—Who presses for removal of Confederate statues from public places? Who pushes back against the removal?
—Who tries their best to whitewash the Confederate flag as a symbol of “Southern pride,” and who instead calls it out as a symbol of hate, racism, and slavery?
