The ships were built in the US and owned by Americans just making a living. The immediate losses were felt solely by Americans. If you count a loyalist as a traitor who forfeits his property, in a time when there was no revolution, no Declaration of Independence, no United States, then I guess so, sure, but that’s silly of you.
It was protest, against an aggressor. It didn’t harm the aggressor in any way except in the display of a lack of control, but the statement was made nonetheless.
