My hunch is a lot of guys get insecure and quit activities that are considered “girly” around your age. Sad but true.

I played chess in elementary school. Not “girly” (hardly any girls in chess, actually) but definitely considered “nerdy.”

I think for that reason a LOT of kids quit playing around middle school. But I did have enough chess buddies throughout high school for us to have an okay team. :)
