Covid-19's name isn't a year off. It was discovered in 2019. It was discovered in a seafood store in December 2019. That store was in Wuhan (but you already know that)

What? Just because it is close to 2020 doesn't mean it should be Covid 20

It was indeed more than just one day.... I do not know exactly how much, but it was more than a day.

there are other coronaviruses out there, but this one (SARS-CoV-19) has been recently discovered around the end of last year. So far the experts are saying it originated in Wuhan.

I know that, but that was not what the discussion was about. It was the specific 19 in the name COVID-19, since it was close to 2020 when the virus was discovered, but it was still 2019. And I am not even sure Wuhan is the full source. COVID-19 is an odd virus. The first case was spot there, but since many people can contract COVID-19 and never notice they did, I don't think we can ever track down "patient zero", and that we cannot even be sure they were Chinese.

That is true, but for now, listen to the professionals

At this moment it's more a political organisation hardly able to oversee the problems at hand, yet pretending that they do trying to avoid panic, causing it in the process. And since all countries world wide do what they want anyway with or without the WHO's consent listening to the WHO will on this moment cause you to get other information that the local authorities have with all kinds of different rules also. And by the way don't pretend the WHO knows what its doing in this particular case. Nobody does. The WHO just as any other organisation is merely improvising, and since they cannot keep local authorities under control, and it's their rule and judgment I have to deal with, not the WHO's. And in both the WHO and the local authorities nobody is in agreement with each other. And being trained in the basics of microbiology and virology myself, I even know some statements are bullshit, merely stated to keep people calm, or at least in an attempt to, as people don't swallow truths and facts easily. Let's say that this entire corona crisis did show us that nobody seems able in any way to handle a world wide pandemic like this. If the WHO would after this is all over come with a proper plan how to deal with situations like this in the future (as COVID-19 won't be the last virus to strike world-wide), they may regain their credibility to me, but at this moment, everyone failed. Let's say, that lack of experience is key here. But in this particular crisis that's all useless. Not to mention the damage done to the economy, society and how lives where threatened otherwise, just for acting in a panic and not considering the consequences as a whole. With all due respect... as I do understand their problems, but fact remains .... they failed... And whatever they say works rather confusing than enlightening. Especially when scientist contradict their own words all the time. Sorry, truth is hard, but hard work alone is never the solution.

Whatever you do, don't do that.... It's only frustrating when people who are supposed to know what they are doing contradict each other and even themselves, and they've been doing that since the breakout. The professionals are losing their credibility to me.

No, I think you aren't looking at the right professionals. WHO is a good example. follow them and their statements.
0 ups, 5y
The politicians are the ones f**king up 99% of doctors agree with each other and if they don't it's because they are getting paid to hide the truth. There is a Lab in when china that specializes in making viruses passable to humans to create vaccines for them. Now this covid is either a lab accident or china deliberately trying to create population control. Keep in mind so.e of America's best scientists work there as well

And how do I recognize the RIGHT professionals.... All of them are under political pressure when they speak in the open. And that includes the WHO. Not to mention that the experts of the RIVM (The Dutch health organisation) already refutes a lot the WHO says, and the quarantine laws in the Netherlands follow the RIVM and not the WHO.... How to drive people nuts, eh?

So your basically saying, we shouldn't trust a global organisation working hard to keep the us safe?

Actually, I don't think ANYONE really knows when the COVID-19 virus first originated.... It's possible it could have been around for quite some time before it's 'discovery'... Especially since the vast majority of those exposed to it suffer little to no symptoms.... But if (in the reportedly unlikely scenario) it turns out to have been created in a lab, then someone would know....
0 ups, 5y
For all we know, covid-19 Could have been around a long time before humans, but it has evolved so much, that humans could get it.

Sorry pal, they don’t change the name if it appears again. Just like the plague. It’s still the plague even though it appeared about 500 years ago and it still has the same name.

But will it always be called COVID-19? In time the year will be come irrelevant, so maybe it will just be called COVID, and since that’s just an acronym, perhaps it will be renamed at some point.
0 ups, 5y,

Covid 19 is an acronym for its actual name. If you'd like you can start calling it by its name, which is Latin and very long. Covid is a branch of the SARS virus too
0 ups, 5y
SARS-CoV-2
0 ups, 5y
Yes, but as COVID simply stands for COrona VIrus Disease, I was wondering if it would be given a somewhat more creative name, but then SARS and AIDS are acronyms too, so maybe COVID will stick.

On the bright side, it's taken less than 0.1% of the world's population. Unlike the Spanish Flu which took 2% of the world's population.
