SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 are related in the same way Humans and Elephants are - they share common ancestors, but their genetic lineages are quite different after that point.

That chloroquine and hydroxychloriquine work against SARS doesn't mean it will, or is even likely, to do the same for the novel variant currently infecting millions - in fact there's a distinct possibility that the effects of COVID-19 could lead to new and deadly side effects not seen with these drugs during the previous FDA trials.

Covid-19 and ACE-2 relationship is very well established. The ACE-2 receptors in humans don’t really care which coronavirus is attaching itself. The only thing that matters is HQC interrupts that process.

All of which will be borne out by the trials in a reasonable manner if true - we don't need to guess or even hope, just wait while the double blind studies are performed.

That's fine, but until medical science catches up with you, you'd be doing so in blind faith because its neither indicated for, nor proven safe or effective in the treatment of COVID-19.

By the same token it is not proven ineffective or unsafe. I don’t consider it blind faith. Considering the research on SARS, recent successful clinical use and history of safe successful application for other diseases, I would hedge that bet. So we just disagree

So you think it’s unethical to provide a dying/very ill person a relatively safe medication which may save their life when there is no “proven” treatment for a new disease?

Doctors frequently prescribe off label medications. Are you 100% against that? Have you stopped to ask yourself why you’re so invested against off label use of drugs?

It's not dishonest - they're different diseases, and the clinical trials for the use of these drugs against COVID-19 have only just begun.

It's like how low-grade unleaded gas works well enough in most engines, makes the engine ping and sputter in sports cars, and can destroy diesel engines outright. We've seen how HCQ performs in the commuter cars of Malaria and SARS, but we have to run trials to know whether it's either safe or effective against COVID-19 which didn't come with an owners manual to tell us what kind of engine it has.

If he were to be truthful, he would’ve said there is research that shows effectiveness against the SARS virus (a similar bat coronavirus) and we should not discourage it’s use. Present usage has shown positive results.

There is no time to do double blind placebo controlled testing. Physicians using each HCQ should document completely and submit all data to the CDC. During the Civil War there was no testing on amputations, but the doctors of the time soon realized cutting the infected limb off saved the life.

We not only have copious amounts of time to perform double-blind studies, but we have more than a million active cases in a population that's positively been bred to accept health risks in return for pittances of cash.

We should be able to knock out dozens of these simultaneously and have the answer soon enough, at which point your hard sell would be unnecessary - not that it is now.

SARS and COVID-19 are very similar coronaviruses. They both attack ACE-2 receptors. HCQ has been shown to interfere with that process when studied against SARS.
Their microbiology is the same as far as ACE-2 receptors goes. The same gas that works in my Ford will work in your Chevy
