Much to Trump’s chagrin, we have a free and open press in this country, whose duty is to question the President’s narrative and hold him accountable.
He doesn’t understand this, because he comes from a professional background where he called the shots and if someone didn’t like it, they were fired.
Trump has peddled the concept of “fake news” and has even threatened his own libel suits in an effort to control bad press.
But the press is protected by the First Amendment and can say virtually anything they want about the President. Subject to their professional duties as journalists and the inevitable fact-checking and loss of reputation that would greet an exaggerated or invented story.
This has been going on since the beginning of our Republic. And I hope it continues that way forever — if, as Ben Franklin said, we can keep it.
