If you had a job before the lock down, you should qualify for unemployment (with a covid bonus) and still be able to pay rent. It is reasonable to expect your landlord to waive normal late fees to accommodate the application process. But ultimately, you should still be able to pay your rent.

It will take longer (thus the logic of extending a grace period), but there should be no substantial income loss. Yes, it is as simple as filling for unemployment, and then you're set. I'm living it right now.

have you considered that there are more people who live in rent-based establishments than yourself, or that the economic situation of your area isnt reflective of the entirety of the usa? do you think these things being the case would influence the ability of filing for unemployment to protect people?
i could be wrong about this, im not entirely sure about how peoples rents are affecting them, but in my mind what people should be using their money for at this time is keeping themselves happy and healthy, not paying for rent

If people are fired without cause, they are still eligible for unemployment. The purpose of unemployment is specifically so you can continue to pay bills. That is it's literal purpose.
Who do you imagine can't pay rent due COVID19, who could pay rent before?
There may come a time, when public aid has dried up, and people are still under house arrest, but until then people still have an obligation to pay their rent, since the government is giving them money explicitly to do so.
Again, I'm not saying on time. That's why there is a moratorium on evictions (but when this is over, people will owe back rent if they haven't paid it).
