I think a fetus is alive, but it's not yet a fully-fledged person. That doesn't happen until the moment of birth. While in the womb, the fetus's rights must be balanced with those of the mother, who everyone agrees is a fully-fledged person with her own rights.
As for me: telling a pregnant woman that she needs to carry her pregnancy to term, and then raise a child she doesn't want for the next 18 years, is something I can't stomach. That's an enormous imposition on someone else. Bearing a child is the most personal act imaginable, and ought only to be done by mothers who are willing and ready and made a conscious choice to do so.
Another thing to keep in mind: Many, if not most, women who have abortions either have children already, or are planning to become mothers in the future, but just aren't emotionally or financially ready yet. So it's a legitimate tool of family planning.
I think we talked about this in another meme. I shared my views on the legal side of the abortion issue there, and this is the more moral/personal side.
Take care.
