Lazarus Long wasn't claiming to be an island. He was, in fact, merely a 2,000-year old curmudgeon in several SCIENCE FICTION books like "Stranger In A Strange Land" written by the acclaimed author Robert Heinlein.
Science fiction that was written by a person. It's self-righteous BS all the same. Not everyone is so arrogant about being so flippant and dismissive about the "unknown". Many people do need a "crutch" at times because humans have human failings and shortcomings. It's an accusation at people for not being 100% conceited at all times. No man is an island, and people cannot do without other people, and that includes religion and religious people.
