CLASS OF 2020 HAS SEEN A LOT IN THEIR 18 SHORT YEARS. THEY WERE BORN JUST AFTER 9/11. THEY ENTERED KINDERGARTEN INTO A SCHOOL SYSTEM THAT HAD BEEN IN TURMOIL SINCE COLUMBINE. THEY SAW SANDY HOOK AND PARKLAND AND EVERY ONE IN BETWEEN, LOOSING FRIENDS EACH TIME. AND NOW, THEY’RE A PART OF GENERATION LOCKDOWN. THEY GREW UP THROUGH THE HOUSING CRISIS OF 2008, SOME OF THEM HAVING STABILITY PULLED RIGHT OUT FROM UNDER THEM. A LOT OF THEM HAD THEIR WORLDS TURNED UPSIDE BY THE 2016 ELECTION, A POINT IN THEIR LIVES WHEN THEY COULD NOT EVEN VOTE. AS CHILDREN, THEY SAW HATE AND SEXISM AND RACISM AND HOMOPHOBIA WIN. THEY’VE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY CAN’T DO IT AND THAT THEY’RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH. THEY’VE SEEN TRAGEDY FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIVES. AND NOW THEY’RE NOT EVEN GOING TO WALK ACROSS THE STAGE.
