They are a subset of the tribes of Juda that left Israel and adopted the Talmud which they say superceded the books of moses (i.e. genesis, exodus, etc...etc...) in it they claim while moses was on the mount getting the ten commandments, they got a visit at the base of the mountain where God revealed secret stuff to them,  that the general public shouldn't know. Of course this book was originally adopted shortly before Jesus's time and they haven't found reference to or copies earlier than that. 

So basically they turned from the Israelite teachings to false teachings.
