A few people do make a full-time lifelong career of sex work, which can include all sorts of activities: stripping, webcamming, erotic massage, porn, prostitution. But much more typically, sex-work is something women (and some men) do part-time, for a temporary period, in order to make ends meet.
Why would they do this? Well: Life is tough and full of unexpected events. We don't have much of a social safety net, and our economy is punishing, especially for those who lack education and social connections. People get fired or laid off, or can't find jobs. In the meantime, rent, utilities, and mortgages don't pay themselves. Medical bills and student debt don't pay themselves. Kids don't put food on the table for themselves.
For some, sex work provides a way to make ends meet while getting their lives together to pursue their larger goals. Being a sex worker doesn't, and shouldn't, brand you for life.
This meme is about sex workers, but I'd add the same goes for anyone -- gay, bi, trans, or anything else -- subject to stigma for sexual reasons.
Unless people are actively hurting others through sex, I see no reason to judge them, let alone throw them in jail for these things.
People will surprise you with their abilities and talents. Don't judge others lest ye be judged.
