"We're not here to workshop content; we're here to discuss WRITING TECHNIQUES and business."

What do you know? The very thing my first post was doing.

Note, their complaint to me is "Not true to their purpose."

What the F@#$ is their purpose?

Will have to check out that sub more, looks more like the process of writing. I see some discussion on a paragraph from Stephen King's book On Writing, which is really a great and interesting book to help new writers.

Maybe what your question was more something about 'character development'? It seems very specific to one physical trait. A real discussion on that topic could go many different ways to probe into whats so important about being powerful. How is that physical characteristic driving the character's motivation? Does it change through the story? Who does the character meet and why is strength so important? What impacts it?

"Maybe what your question was more something about 'character development'?"

That was the other guy's question. The second link is my question, where yes I talk about writing techniques and multiple subjects, they bitch at him for not going writing techniques, the very thing my post was about, yet we both somehow disobey their rules.

Really, I find it very bizarre. At first, I was fine with mine being kicked out for some rules, but then another guy gets kicked out for the complete opposite reason?

Huh. I've only been on Reddit since last June and discovered shortly after my first post that there are no second chances, once you get banned or restricted, there are some serious personal fifedoms and cliques, probably from individuals who have been moderators for years. They love the control and dispense with anyone who has an alternative opinion. Could be that they simply don't like the subject matter of your post and it has nothing to do with trying to help you. Maybe try creating your own subreddit that is specific to your own needs? Dunno.

Or I simply need to find a better place or site to actually talk about writing techniques?

Yeah back in the day I used to be involved in more of that stuff, local workshops and stuff. I kind of don't like online feedback - you get what you pay for. Seriously though, there are some great books out there. At the end of the day, putting in the time and just writing on your own is the best. Don't worry about what other people think. Since the lockdown I've read some good trashy fiction and I've forgotten how shitty even some of the 'best selling' authors are.

Huh, good point. But my mindset works differently. I need some sort of feedback in order to even know if I'm taking my writing in the right direction. It's not like there aren't places that deal with that kind of stuff, which is why I found someone asking for help and getting denied so annoying.

"Since the lockdown I've read some good trashy fiction and I've forgotten how shitty even some of the 'best selling' authors are."

That what my post was doing, talking about the weakness that some modern writers ignore because they have such a faithful fanbase. I wanted to know if other people spotted the same mistakes and were able to point out ones even I missed in hopes of pushing the writers to be better. I figure with this lockdown, people, especially full-time writers could finally take a step back and see if they have gotten too cozy writing only half best.

That's funny/coincidence considering I hadn't read your post! I'm not sure exactly if its fair to call them mistakes necessarily; basically if it gets the job done and communicates information appropriately then its effective. There's probably many examples of off-the-wall writing techniques that end up producing a popular book. We all have personal foibles and thats what makes creative writing so empowering. I'm thinking 'Infinite Jest' or Ulysses - I still haven't finished Jest, just found it too pointless, yet it has many fans. Likewise, I loved reading James Joyce but I've read many criticisms of that book. You also have to consider that writing style is only one component of a good book. Plot, structure, suspense - I dunno it can get complicated fast. I have problem dropping a book if I think it sucks, even if its on the best seller list. To each their own...

at some point I should add a meme to this thread ;)

"basically if it gets the job done and communicates information appropriately then its effective"

That's just it, they often don't and are simply ignored to move on the next plot point. And yes, I am talking about plot structure, World-building, Character growth, the whole lot.

Example; in the most recent season of Clone Wars, they chose to replace a new character with another new character chosen in a different place, yet didn't choose to change the actions later that was meant for the previous version, in doing the replacement made out of character choices and stupid moves just to move the plot. If they wanted to use the new character properly they should change the later actions. At the same time, if they wanted to keep these actions they never change the character out in first place.

many other shows make even this smallest of mistakes and don't get any complaints. In fact, I heard one fan praising this show alone for making the mistaken end as quickly as possible rather complain over how it should have been fixed,

Fans love to ignore problems in the works they love, but I can't. When something is wrong with my work I want them to say it, not be silent. I treat other works the same way.

These types of details are what I wanted to go after during the series of posts I wanted to start on Reddit, but now I will be forced to go over the problem on other sites not fit to hold the data I'm unloading.

I'm not after fights or problem-causing. I just don't like pointless changes that add nothing to the story at all or at worse ruin the story as a whole

Consider we are about two to three replies from the red zone that might be wise.

Nice discussion, such a refreshing change, thanks! I think its cool to have some integrity in writing, it will pay dividends later because some people do value consistent treatments and integrated storylines...
