Explaining the origins of the "media bias" conservatives incessantly complain about. | We don’t watch the news to get an uncritical raw feed of the President’s own talking points. We can read his Twitter account and press releases, and watch his unedited press conferences, if we wanted that. Journalists are trained to get to the bottom of a story and follow the facts wherever they lead. If the truth turns out to be unfavorable to the President, then the media has a responsibility and professional obligation to report it that way. The alternative is press self-censorship. | image tagged in media lies, cnn, nbc logo, media bias, mainstream media, liberal media | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

Naturally, even attempting to chart a topic as subjective as "media bias" is a subjective exercise in itself. You can certainly quibble with the placements here on this chart, but they strike me as broadly accurate.

Your best bet for a straight-shooting, accurate news story is right down the middle.

Also recognize the difference between "fact reporting" and "opinion journalism." The latter involves more complex/provocative analysis, but is not necessarily worthless because of it. In fact, opinion journalism can be quite valuable.

I routinely read opinion sources as far left as MSNBC and as far right as FOX News. Exposing yourself to explicitly liberal and conservative perspectives is a worthwhile exercise, too.

Though I do not stray much beyond that into the fringes of explicitly partisan journalism -- I don't read Daily Kos or Breitbart, and I certainly do not read InfoWars. If I encounter a link from those sites, I typically don't waste my time.
