Venting is rather blowing off steam. Let the stress go. Complaining is more that you give an in-depth view on what you are angry about. Both can often come with good reasoning though, although venting can have good reasons, but is not necessarily so.... Of course, there's also a third category and that is whining, and then you are just saying bad things, but the only reason why is that you cannot accept things they are and are not open for any explanation.

To me, venting is when I tell someone about my shitty day or something and complaining is when I tell the person who caused my anger what angered me, hopefully in a constructive manner. Or let's put it in other terms: At work I usually have to write emails twice. The first draft is venting about people sending me wrong calculations or plans with mistakes in them once again, but I don't send that one because it would only hurt and not be professional. But it calms me down so I can concentrate on the second, constructive version. It's still complaining about the mistakes but not in a personal way. Rather, it states the problem in a direct way so it can be solved without calling anyone stupid.
