Universal healthcare doesn't mean all cancer patients would be treated, especially if they are over 60 or 70, much less in a timely manner. Currently, we don't have enough doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel to supply that level of care. And then there is the logistics of making enough supplies to maintain the standard of care we do have, which may not be feasible.
Take a look at the NHS, they are crashing bad because they don't have enough resources and people are waiting in long queues for basic surgeries. Not to mention the fact that elderly are more likely to go untreated because they are seen as a waste of medical supplies compared to younger people. Many, if they can afford it, come to the US to receive timely treatment for things like cataracts and other medical conditions.
Rather than have universal healthcare, why doesn't the government trust bust pharmaceutical companies? Why don't we put a stop to pharma having a corrupt hand in our politics? Why don't states mandate hospital charging systems to not charge exorbitant amounts of money for profit? Why doesn't the FDA push for studies of natural treatments that could cut costs of pharmaceuticals? And we could always look into making more competition for insurance companies to provide better product for a better price.
We could make a small social system within each state that covers extreme cases like cancer, life-altering defects, and the extremely poor, but that should be left for each individual state to decide and they get to set the limits. People who can afford it should get a choice in whether they want insurance or not, not be mandated to get it for the sake of a banker's profit scheme.
Universal healthcare, just isn't feasible, logical or as humane as it sounds.
It would mean putting a clamp on any immigration (illegal and legal) because of the limitations of supply versus demand. EU is in trouble currently, because of mass amounts of illegal immigrants overwhelming their systems and not paying into those systems.
Also, why not put more effort in encouraging people to live healthier lifestyles so that the need for a doctor becomes minimal?
