I hope the “ending America’s longest war” bit is true. There’s an entire generation and a half who don’t remember a time when there wasn’t a war in Afghanistan. That accounts for a huge percentage of the forces there right now...many of them weren’t even in kindergarten yet on 9/11.

We’ll see how it shakes out. We don’t have a good history of leaving places. And when we do, it doesn’t always end well.

Yeah I Hope So To I Remember Because I Was 16/17 When It Started But Have Younger Cousins Who Don't Even Know What It's Like Not To Be At War.

I have a nephew in the military who was a baby when it happened. He serves his country, which has been at war for his entire remembrance. He doesn’t know what “peacetime” is. Sad.

Hopefully They Will Soon Know Peace And We As A People Can Move On From This Time In History Into Something Better.

If the Taliban go back to business as usual and rebuild their terror network, then this is just asking for another 9/11 further down the road. There’s a lot more work to be done by the State Dept and CIA to make this last.

Since Trump isn’t exactly friendly to those two, we’ll see. I hope there’s a long game to this deal, but I’m not confident that he’s the right one to plan or facilitate it.

Well I always understood Afghanistan occupation to be about the poppy fields. The Taliban originally ordered all of the crops destroyed and those planting /farming them warned off replanting when they gained power.
Once U.S forces were deployed it took a little while to push back on Taliban but once they forced them from power the planting of the crop begun again.
So I'm not sure the CIA has given up on ensuring the drugs are being produced as it was always a source for funding covert operations.
Otherwise yes I think any fears of possible negative outcomes are probably well founded. Even if I don't think every scenario would eventuate.
