The most common theme throughout the Bible may be teaching blind obedience to God or leaders representing God; this is often tested, most famously when God allowed Satan to tempt Job! Supposedly God has tested our faith and obedience repeatedly since then; and the faithful were routinely taught the way to pass this test is to obey God, & leaders believed to represent him, regardless of evidence! However, even though those that fought the Crusades or carried out the Holocaust may have thought they were passing an obedience test; they were also failing an intelligence test & a morality test, which would have required learning when to disobey!
