MLK was assassinated on April 4, 1968
I think he would be:
—Pleased to see the end of the Vietnam War
—Excited by Bernie Sanders’ campaign
—Disgusted by almost everything else
A lot of folks don’t realize how interested MLK became in issues like wealth inequality and anti-war activism after the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
And while the Civil Rights Act itself advanced things for people of color in this country, it hasn’t translated into black-white economic equality in a broad sense.
I think MLK would be shocked at how long we’ve allowed this situation to continue without vigorous attempts to solve it. Some Democratic presidential candidates do try to propose solutions to racial inequality, but they’re pretty small-bore to begin with and even then are considered politically DOA.
There’s plenty of blame to go around, but the lion’s share falls on the unwillingness to take real steps to place black families in the financial positions that they would have enjoyed, they not been subjected to centuries of slavery and another century of Jim Crow on top of that.
The continuation of broad, de facto segregation in housing (and therefore schooling and, as a result, job opportunities) doesn’t help, either.
Many, many, many more issues to discuss but these are just a few.
