I was thinking the same thing. When I first saw it I thought it showed when someone else upvoted it, but apparently it's more important to notify us to tell is what we've done. 🙄
I have a use for it.... I sometimes forget to hit the upvote button in my haste.... Now I don't need to check the page anymore... Saves me a lot of time, and forgotten upvotes I can now still cast more quickly.... so yeah it WAS needed!

Or at least exploding a little. Man, I don't like it! It has a cluttered look to it am I right? I feel like it's too much. Maybe if the Up voted and Replied indicators were smaller it would be nice.
They fell like they’re putting up idiot bars for us. But then, considering some of the newer kids on this site, I can kinda understand their intention... 😆
