Yea I'm guessing the complicated part would also stem from the religious aspect and history of byz and the church separated into 2, creating Eastern Orthodox Christianity the changes and fall. Using it as an example of a shit show.

Yep.That and in poems,it's used like that,like
"Her life was Byzantine." or something,it can mean superior,and then crumbling to its knees,or it can be used like you said,in the religious sense.
