The Boy Scouts thought it would solve their problem by inviting and promoting gays to join the organisation. And of course that's what I meant with my question.

The Boy Scouts won a court case to allow them to ban gay leaders, then went ahead anyway. They deserve what they got

Wow, that is so dumb. Some parts of the organisation must have known. Some say there is a likelihood that the exposure and promotion of all of this was as a means of the greedy getting their fingers on the Boy Scouts properties and land holdings which would otherwise never be available generally.

Are you suggesting that greedy persons would destroy a century-old organization for profit? (sarc) Or is it more likely that the organization destroyed itself by trying to seek approval from groups that didn't have the BSA's better interests in mind?

Some combination of both. The greedy will set situations in play and or promote and further a situation which will benefit them.
So I would think that there had to be those who would want to see it continued

And of course those people who wanted it to fail.
