It does work for most people. I worked in health care management and related fields for decades. Most people in America have more coverage than in single payer Canada. More people have access to a primary care physician there, but they do not cover a penny of drugs. Drugs are the fastest growing medical expense and the thing that people complain about the most. Canada also has limited chemical dependency and psychiatric treatment. I saw a billboard sign in my community from hospital guaranteeing 30-minute maximum waits in their ER. ER care in single payer UK is a disaster. Patient surveys in the UK consistently give the system low marks on waiting times for appointments, that can take years. Their national formulary does not offer many drugs we take for granted. A pill commonly prescribed in America which has cured some forms of breast cancer was still not available there, the last time I looked. Single Payer will not solve all of the problems we currently have and will add those that come with government control. Politics has no place in health care. Shortages of care in UK are traceable to politics. A few years ago the liberal Prime Minister of Canada cut funding for the Province run healthcare system. He told them to "Make do." If Trump ran our health care system today, he would use the money to build his wall. Reagan signed budget bills that barely funded the VA healthcare system, then sequestered (refused to spend) 7% to make his deficit spending look smaller. Medicare for All is a horrible idea to fix a system with a number of problems. And, according to a Kaiser survey 67% actively oppose it. Gallup says that, now that people know what it really is and who will pay for it, only 13% of registered voters support it. It is hard enough to get the current system funded and fix the parts of it that don't work. If we had single payer today, it would be underfunded and politicians would be trying to cut it even more. They are not going to vote for such a system. It is worse than a "pipe dream," it is a campaign issue for Trump to use to get some people to ignore his record and re-elect him.
