Democrats didn't get *additional witnesses. They already had 18 witnesses, but those weren't good enough because none of them had any evidence against the President. You should ask yourself the question - if the 18 witnesses were enough to impeach, why weren't they enough to convict? The answer is simple - they weren't enough to impeach, it was entirely political.
*Senate rules allow for the evidence used in the impeachment to be used in the trial. Nowhere in the rules are the House managers allowed to call witnesses not included in the evidence used to draft the articles of impeachment, during the Senate trial.
