Of course. We can make farming less cruel and eat less meat, even with increased costs.

So, are we against animal cruelty if we pay for them to be killed against their will?

I honestly wish animals were treated better, in many cases, even if they are food. Heard of a horse slaughterhouse where horses that would run to their killers for comfort would get their eye shot out by errant rifle fire. It's disgusting.
