In modern Greek the letter is called 'vita' and pronounced as a 'v'. And apparently the 'v' and 'b' come close, as I've seen many miss-translations from Japanese were the 'v' and the 'b' were mixed up (as well as the 'l' and the 'r') and I know that in Spanish the 'v' is pronounced as a 'b' "el vino" [el bino] (the wine). Makes me wonder....
