I don't think bankruptcy is a great idea either. But at least bankruptcy takes into account ability to repay and affects ones credit. Also, since one has to file for bankruptcy, it wouldn't forgive all student debt, just those who really need it. It always struck me as odd that most debt can be eliminated in court, but not student debt.

Kids were abusing bankruptcy. Most are broke leaving school, and have no job at the moment. So they file, then get a good job. Bankruptcy reform law around 2005 forced reorganization instead of liquidation, so they have to use disposable income for 3-5 years on their dents. But student loans had to show a hardship like disability.
