THE MEANING BEHIND 1 TIMOTHY 4:16
Life and Doctrine should match. Meaning, life must reflect doctrine you teach, and your teaching must be evident in your life. This is the doctrine of Assurance in the nutshell. And when it says:
"...for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."
It is not speaking of works as if necessary to save you and your hearers. One cannot know when whether one or the other is Born Again, and know for a surety that is Born Again (John 3:3-8). Thus by attending to life and doctrine, you are checking self whether one is Born Again (2 Corinthians 13:5).
And so by doing this, you are setting an example for your hearers to follow which thus in turn assure them of their salvation.
