I don't know about the U.S. but in the Netherlands there is an obligation to guarantee a minimal weight (and it's mostly shown on the package with the e logo, which means "estimate", since doing this 100% precise is impossible but if it says 500g e, than you can at least be sure that it's 500 grams or more).
