Lol! I've joked before that Abraham Lincoln could have been the first (closeted) half-black President.

Nah, it's kind of a joke. Obama is technically our first black president... sorta-kinda in a one-dropish kind of way. Given that he has a white parent, we can't accurately say that America's had a black president. One could call him white and still be just as accurate.

It's a tricky and delicate subject. Yes, Obama's biracial, but he identifies as black, and that's also relevant to consider here.

50/50 biracial folks in this country also more often than not tend to be viewed as having black skin, in terms of being subject to "routine traffic stops" and other such unpleasant things.

Obama for sure had a unique upbringing with his significant time spent overseas as a youngster, which most black Americans haven't, so that sets him apart in a way.

But having read some of Obama's own writings on race and writings by other black American authors about him, and his historic achievement in the '08 election that many young black folks look up to (however you want to characterize it), Obama's become a touchstone of being black in America, and dismissing his blackness is a tad dismissive of that.

If he identifies as black, wouldn't that dismiss his whiteness?

Multi-ethnicity is a weird issue. You can identify as one ethnicity while not identifying as anything else, you can identify as multiple ethnicities, or you can identify as none of the above. It's a blessing and a curse.

While he can claim the title of "first black president" due to his 50% black heritage, it seriously wouldn't be fair if a black person with two black parents were elected. That's why we can kind of say that he's a "black" president, but we can also simultaneously say we've never had a black president.

And the fact that our first "black" president is actually half-black, it really does show black what blackness in America looks like. It seems as if we want to claim an actual black president, we should elect one who's... black.
