That's why we need a bit of both, mixed economics. Socialism unchecked by capitalism becomes communism and capitalism unregulated by socialism becomes plutocracy, both of which are tyrannical.
I understand enough to recognize that while free markets are valuable and important ends, they aren't a universal means to all other valuable or important ends.
No, it isn't meaningless. And I believe I just said free markets are an end. But if one claims they're the reason we're not living as peasants, than one is saying that is the end and markets become the means to that end.
