The issue isn't as simple as a single factor like gun laws, it's actual mixed with a cultural problem. If you've argued about this quite a bit, you should have heard of Switzerland that has an high gun ownership rate, liberal gun laws, and low homicide rate. On the other side, a few counties with strict firearm laws have extremely high homicide rates, which your source left out due to income.
